Seaworld Drive, Marine Stadium, Marina Mirage and Southport

Sea World Cruises, Boattime Yacht Charters and Kokomo Cruises all leave from Main Beach. Sea World Cruises boards at its terminal on Seaworld Drive, asks guests to arrive at least 20 minutes early, and offers free parking in the Sea World car park without a theme park ticket. Boattime boards at the Marine Stadium jetty and pontoon 30 minutes before its 9:00 am and 12:00 pm sailings, and Kokomo Cruises leaves from Marina Mirage.

Spirit of Gold Coast meets on the grass beside the Broadwater Cafe at Aqua Adventures, 95 Marine Parade, Southport, and asks passengers to be there 30 minutes before departure. It schedules trips around tides and winds, and may use its second boat, Spirit Junior, since Mariner's Cove Marina closed. Sea World Cruises says its boats reach the humpback route in under 45 minutes from the car park.

Northbound humpbacks from June, then calves heading south

Spirit of Gold Coast says humpbacks travel north early in the season to breed and give birth, and come back south later with newborn calves. Destination NSW places the births between the Gold Coast and the Great Barrier Reef. Queensland's tourism board gives the season as June to October, while operators run longer: Spirit from June to early November, Sea World Cruises from late May to early November.

Sea World Cruises says the whales are active all day, so morning and afternoon cruises both have sightings, and guests can listen on a hydrophone and use underwater viewing when conditions allow. Sea World and Spirit of Gold Coast both say their boats stop at 100 m, and Spirit adds that curious whales sometimes surface unexpectedly close to the boat.

Tides, winds and the check-in rough-sea call

Light rain and cloud do not stop the cruises. Sea World Cruises has covered viewing areas and sails only when it is safe; if rough seas are expected it tells guests at check-in, and they can sail, reschedule or take a refund. Spirit of Gold Coast instead calls the day before to reschedule when conditions are too rough, and Boattime says its cruises run in all weather unless unsafe.

Sea World Cruises says some guests get motion sickness, and Spirit of Gold Coast suggests eating lightly and buying tablets from a pharmacist beforehand. Wear flat, closed-toe shoes and bring a jacket or jumper, since the sea breeze can be chilly, plus sunglasses and a camera.

Sun Goddess, Sea World Cruises, Kokomo and Spirit

Boattime Yacht Charters has the lowest fare, AUD 79.50 per person, on Sun Goddess, a 34 m (114 ft) superyacht that takes up to 135 guests. A qualified marine biologist narrates, and hot chocolate and espresso are free. Cancellations up to 24 hours before are fully refunded. Sea World Cruises charges AUD 89, or AUD 159 in the Captain's Club with lounge seating and priority boarding, and AUD 199 with Sea World entry.

Sea World Cruises puts marine researchers and expert guides on every tour, and part of each ticket funds research through the Sea World Foundation. Groups of up to nine get a full refund for cancelling more than 3 hours before departure; combo tickets are non-refundable. Kokomo Cruises charges AUD 99 per adult, AUD 88 for children 3 to 15 and AUD 340 for two adults and two children, with live commentary, and sells drinks, snacks and photos on board.

Spirit of Gold Coast is the priciest at AUD 109 per adult, AUD 69 per child and AUD 89 for seniors and students. Its 24 m power catamaran is surveyed for 120 passengers, and the fare includes morning tea and marine biologist commentary. Its sales are final, with rescheduling on 48 hours' notice. All four give a free return trip if no whale is seen. Kokomo quotes private whale charters with an optional stop at Wavebreak Island, and Boattime lists private yacht charters.

Watching from shore

  • Burleigh Head National Park. Queensland Parks lists the chance to see whales in spring at this headland park at Burleigh Heads, which has a lookout. Its Oceanview track was closed for wet weather from 22 to 28 October 2026, so check park alerts before you go.

Before you book

  • Arrive at the Sea World Cruises terminal on Seaworld Drive at least 20 minutes before departure; parking in the Sea World car park is free and no theme park ticket is needed.
  • Eat lightly before the cruise and buy seasickness tablets from a pharmacist in advance, as Spirit of Gold Coast suggests.
  • Wear flat, closed-toe shoes and bring a warm jacket, sunglasses and a camera.
  • Getting there. Gold Coast Airport is at Bilinga, about 90 km south of Brisbane. Express bus 777 runs from the airport to Broadbeach South light rail station, where passengers can change to the G:link light rail.
