Humpbacks gather in Samaná Bay from January 15 to March 31 to mate and calve, and adult trips cost $45 to $65. Sanctuary rules allow three boats per whale group and keep them at least 50 m away.
Dark months are the peak for that species, light months are the rest of its season. October is marked.

Boats leave from the waterfront of Santa Bárbara de Samaná, the town on the bay's north shore. Whale Samana boards at the main town dock, across the street from its office at Calle Mella #4, behind Santorino Restaurant. DDD Whale Watching meets on Avenida La Marina at the main dock and sails at 9:30 am. Moto Marina Tours runs from its own pier at Av. La Marina 3.
The bay is only one part of the protected area. The IWC case study puts the Marine Mammal Sanctuary of the Dominican Republic at 25,000 km², taking in the offshore Silver Bank (protected since 1986) and Navidad Bank (1996). Silver Bank is visited on expensive live-aboard trips more than 100 km offshore. Of the 46 permits issued for 2026, three were for trips leaving Puerto Plata, according to Diario Libre.
Every trip here is a humpback trip. The whales come into Samaná Bay from January to March to mate and to calve, according to the IWC whale watching handbook, which counts at least 252 individuals identified in the bay. Whale Samana and DDD Whale Watching both sell trips from January 15 to March 31, and Whale Samana runs two departures a day from February 6 to March 13.
Samaná's viewing rules tell captains to avoid competitive and surface-active groups, and name breaching, fin slapping, lob tailing and tail slashing as aggressive behavior. The rules also single out light-gray calves with a strongly folded dorsal fin: boats should not approach them, and if the mother brings one toward a boat, the engine must be shut down.
Wind decides whether boats sail. Under Samaná's rules, captains must confer before trips once the wind holds at 20 knots, to agree whether going out is safe. At a steady 30 knots all whale watching stops, according to the IWC handbook. Boats must also be out of the sanctuary before 4 pm, and the latest scheduled departure on the operators' sites is Whale Samana's 1:30 pm trip.
Anyone on a boat shorter than 10 m must wear a life jacket for the whole trip. Whale Samana keeps sea bands and Dramamine on board for passengers who get seasick. DDD Whale Watching describes its 40 ft motor catamaran as stable, with a smooth ride.
Whale Samana calls itself the first whale watching operator in Samaná, running since 1983, and its founder, the naturalist Kim Beddall (1956 to 2025), was honored at the opening of the 2026 season. Its custom-built 55 ft double-deck boat carries 60. Adults pay $65 and children $35, a Cayo Levantado stop adds $5, and if no whales turn up, the next trip is free.
DDD Whale Watching bills itself as the lowest price in Samaná, at $45 per adult and $36 for children 1 to 8. Its 40 ft catamaran sails at 9:30 am and is back around 11 am, or about 4:30 pm with lunch on Cayo Levantado ($55 and $46). DDD advertises guaranteed sightings but does not say what it offers if none happen.
Moto Marina Tours says it has worked the port since 1986. Its motor catamarans run a half-day trip that is back at the pier at noon, or a full day with lunch on Cayo Levantado, and it publishes no prices. The IWC case study also describes small yolas of up to 9 m carrying 10 passengers, alongside launches that sell whale and beach combinations.
