Sperm whales are resident here all year because the Kaikōura Canyon's deep water comes within about 1 km of shore. The boat tour costs NZD 185 per adult; 30-minute whale flights start at NZD 220 a seat.

Whaleway Station, South Bay and the Peketa airstrip
Every Whale Watch Kaikōura tour checks in at the Whaleway Station, the only building on Whaleway Station Road. The company asks you to arrive 30 minutes before departure, closes check-in 5 minutes before, and says sailing times do not move. A bus then takes passengers to its marina at South Bay. Allow 3 hours 15 minutes in total for a little over 2 hours at sea. The car park is open in daylight only, with no overnight parking.
The whales are close because of the Kaikōura Canyon. Its head lies about 30 m down and the floor drops to about 2,000 m, with deep water only about 1 km off the coast south of the peninsula. Wings Over Whales flies from Kaikōura Airport at 617 State Highway 1, Peketa, a small sealed strip about 6 km south of town, and checks passengers in 30 minutes before take-off. Kaikoura Helicopters leaves from beachfront helipads and flies on demand from 8:00 am daily.
Sperm whales are the main sighting, and Whale Watch Kaikōura says they are present in every month. The company reports finding whales on more than 90% of tours, with one or two seen on an average trip. Humpback, pilot, blue, southern right and fin whales turn up by season, though the operator publishes no months for them. Orca appear most often in summer, according to the same FAQ.
Pods of dusky dolphins are common, and Hector's dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and wandering albatross are also on the operator's list. From November to March, a Department of Conservation rest period stops all vessels from viewing dusky dolphins between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. Whale Watch Kaikōura counts 13 albatross species, 14 petrels and 7 shearwaters in local waters.
Motion sickness ratings and the captain's call
Each Whale Watch Kaikōura sailing gets a motion sickness rating, given at check-in: moderate is the standard and high is used on rougher days. The company says seasickness can be unavoidable, sells natural tablets and Sea Legs in its gift shop, and keeps a few VR goggles and sick bags on board. Passengers stay seated while the boat runs at speed. Its fleet includes Te Ao Mārama and Wheketere, and crews normally keep passengers seated when the boats travel at speed.
Sailings depend on sea and weather, and the captain decides about 15 minutes before check-in opens. A cancelled tour does not move you automatically: you have to ask for a transfer, subject to space. Dress warmly in layers, wear flat shoes and bring a light waterproof for the outside decks. Only the VIP Captain's Cabin sells food on board, so bring your own snacks; alcohol is not allowed.
Whale Watch Kaikōura, Airvans and beachfront helicopters
Whale Watch Kaikōura has held the only permit to watch whales from a boat off Kaikōura since 1990. Its Ocean Cabin seat costs NZD 185 for an adult and NZD 60 for a child aged 3 to 15; under-3s cannot go. Its 23.9 m catamaran seats 104 in the main cabin, though the company says it keeps numbers well under that, plus 12 in the upstairs VIP Captain's Cabin (NZD 265) with its own host. Trained hosts narrate the whole tour, and an 80% refund applies if no whale is seen.
Wings Over Whales charges NZD 265 per adult and NZD 150 for children 11 and under for 30 minutes in a 7-seat GA8 Airvan, with a window for every passenger. It offers no sighting guarantee, though its Tourism New Zealand listing cites a 95% success rate. A Kaikoura Helicopters seat is NZD 220 with three or four aboard, or NZD 325 each for two, and the flight starts with a 20-minute sperm whale briefing. It says it hovers in slow orbits so the whole whale is visible, reports whales on 97% of flights and refunds nothing if none is found.
Wings Over Whales sells the whole plane as a private flight for NZD 1,900. Whale Watch Kaikōura refunds only cancellations made 48 hours or more before check-in. Wings Over Whales needs notice by 4:00 pm the day before and refunds or rebooks its own weather cancellations, and Kaikoura Helicopters reschedules weather-stopped flights at no charge.
