Dana Point Harbor, Golden Lantern and Harbor Drive

Dana Wharf and Capt. Dave's both sail from Dana Point Harbor, which was dedicated in 1971. Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching checks guests in at 34675 Golden Lantern and runs several 2-hour trips a day, with times shown on its booking calendar. Its boats are the 149-passenger Dana Pride, the Ocean Adventures catamaran (up to 59, with a raised viewing platform) and the newer Lot' A Fun catamaran (up to 45). The page does not say which boat a given departure uses.

Capt. Dave's Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari is at 24440 Dana Point Harbor Drive and asks guests to turn up 30 to 45 minutes before the tour. Early arrivals can check in and talk with the land crew. Its main boat is the catamaran Manute'a, fitted with underwater viewing pods. The Ocean Institute's 65 ft research vessel, R/V Sea Explorer, runs its tours on scheduled mornings from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and its pages do not name the dock.

Mid-December gray whales and late May blues

Dana Wharf lists gray whales from mid-December through April, as they travel between the Arctic feeding grounds and the breeding lagoons of Mexico. NOAA Fisheries says calves are born from early January to mid-February and that northbound grays move up the West Coast from mid-February to May. Numbers are down: Spectrum News reported in July 2026 that NOAA's 2025 estimate was the lowest since the 1970s, and the ACS/LA census at Point Vicente found sightings only slightly better in 2026.

Blue whales are seen from late May through early November, Dana Wharf says, and humpbacks from late April to early December, with most sightings from May to November. Fin whales come from late spring through early fall, especially June to September, and minke whales mainly from May to September. Orcas can appear in any month but turn up more often from late spring through fall.

Dolphins are the year-round constant. Dana Wharf says common dolphins travel in pods that can number in the thousands, most often from June to September, while bottlenose, Pacific white-sided and Risso's dolphins are seen all year. Its list also includes hammerhead sharks in summer, great white sharks mainly in August and September, and ocean sunfish from June through September.

Smoother morning cruises and a windbreaker

Capt. Dave's says the ocean is usually smoothest on morning cruises, so it suggests an earlier trip for anyone prone to seasickness. It also advises eating lightly, skipping spicy food and alcohol, and getting a full night's sleep beforehand. Ginger cookies or gum and pressure-point wristbands may help. Its list of things to bring includes jackets or windbreakers, sunblock, caps or visors, binoculars and spare camera memory.

On Capt. Dave's Zodiac, a rigid inflatable for up to 20, coolers and bags have to fit on your lap, so closed drink containers and dry snacks such as granola bars work best. The operator does not take pregnant guests or anyone with head, neck or back injuries on that boat, and the minimum age is 6. Its catamaran Manute'a has a covered cabin with cushioned seating.

Dana Wharf's Whale Check and Capt. Dave's pods

Dana Wharf, family-run since 1971, says it was Orange County's first whale watching company. Its 2-hour trip costs $72.08 for adults, $61.48 for seniors 55 and over and active military, $55.12 for children 3 to 12 and $9 for infants. The adult fare is half price every Tuesday, not counting fees. A marine naturalist narrates every trip. If the captain judges there was no whale or good showing of dolphins, you get a Whale Check for a free return trip that never expires.

Capt. Dave's says it sees whales and dolphins on more than 95% of tours. Its 2.5-hour Signature Safari on catamarans costs $86.92 after an 18% online discount (regularly $100), with children 1 to 12 at $60.84, and the 2-hour Zodiac ride for ages 6 and up costs the same. If no whales and no dolphins are seen, regular-fare guests can come back free within a year. Tickets cannot be cancelled, refunded or changed unless trip protection is bought at booking.

The Ocean Institute charges $40 for adults and children alike, including general admission to the institute. Its R/V Sea Explorer sails only on scheduled dates, mostly weekends in the October to December 2026 listings, and naturalists brief guests before boarding. Private charters start at $350 with Capt. Dave's, whose 6-passenger motor yacht ORCA also runs a 3.5-hour Whale Geek trip from $192 per person, and at $550 with Dana Wharf.

Watching from shore

  • Dana Point Headlands. The headlands above the harbor have 68 acres open to the public, with a nature center and walking trails. Dana Point's high cliffs are a popular place to spot whales and dolphins, and on clear days the view reaches Catalina Island and La Jolla.

Before you book

  • Capt. Dave's allows coolers no bigger than a 12-can hard cooler or a 24-can soft cooler, and no glass containers.
  • Dana Wharf's $61.48 military fare is for active duty only, and ID is checked at check-in.
  • A Capt. Dave's free return ticket after a no-sightings safari is not transferable and expires one year after the original trip.
  • Getting there. Dana Point is 59 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 65 miles northwest of San Diego. Its harbor is also where the Catalina Express leaves for Avalon on Catalina Island.
