Broadway Pier, Emerson Street and Shelter Island

San Diego's whale boats leave from three different waterfronts. Flagship Cruises & Events sails from Broadway Pier downtown at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm daily in season, and asks guests to arrive 15 minutes before departure. H&M Landing, at 2803 Emerson Street, runs a 10 am trip and wants passengers there 45 minutes early; it says the dock has acres of parking just onshore from the boats. Its trips head out through San Diego Bay past a large U.S. Navy base.

Next Level Sailing checks guests in from 10:00 to 10:30 am at a blue flag on the grass across from the Island Palms Best Western, 2050 Shelter Island Drive. The yacht America sails at 11:00 am and is back by 3:00 pm. Flagship says gray whales stay within about 3 to 5 miles of shore early in the season, while northbound whales travel 9 to 12 miles out. H&M Landing says most trips stay within a few miles of the coast, though some days run 10 to 12 miles offshore.

Mid-January gray whale peak off Point Loma

Gray whales arrive off San Diego in late December and peak in mid-January, according to the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation; the National Park Service gives the season at Cabrillo as late December to mid-March. Boats start earlier and finish later. H&M Landing sees southbound whales from November to early February and northbound whales from late February through April, and Flagship's 2026 to 2027 season opens December 12 and runs through April.

Gray whale numbers are low. Spectrum News reported in July 2026 that NOAA's 2025 estimate for the eastern North Pacific population was the lowest since the 1970s. The ACS/LA census at Point Vicente, in Rancho Palos Verdes, saw only a slight improvement in 2026. NOAA Fisheries says calves are born in Mexico's lagoons from early January to mid-February, and northbound whales pass the West Coast from mid-February to May.

Blue whales come in summer: City Cruises names June to September, and H&M Landing simply says summer. H&M also reports humpbacks at times in March, orcas at any time of year, and dolphins, seals and sea lions daily. Flagship lists fin, humpback and minke whales alongside the grays, and City Cruises says common dolphins often swim with the whales.

Layers and rain gear for winter trips

H&M Landing, Flagship and City Cruises all say to dress in layers. H&M adds rain gear, since the weather can shift during a trip, and City Cruises includes a recyclable mist poncho. City Cruises says early morning and late afternoon are best, when the sun is softer and whales are more active. Flagship suggests sunscreen or a hat, binoculars and a camera, and recommends taking seasickness medication ahead of time if you are prone to it.

H&M Landing says motion sickness is rarely a problem on its trips and keeps generic remedies on board for anyone worried. Its 85 ft main boat has outdoor benches, indoor galley seating and a full-service galley; guests may bring food, but not ice chests, glass or alcohol. Flagship's boat has two decks, and its main deck and interior are wheelchair accessible, though the top deck and restrooms are not.

Flagship's guarantee and the yacht America under sail

H&M Landing lists the lowest fare, $30 to $55 per adult, for a 3 hour narrated trip on its 85 ft boat, with a reduced fare for children 12 and under. Every passenger, infants included, needs a paid ticket. It runs only from Thanksgiving weekend to April 15 and states plainly that whale sightings are not guaranteed. If weather or low bookings cancel a trip, staff try to rebook passengers on another date.

Flagship Cruises & Events charges $54 per adult on weekdays and $57 on weekends, and $40.50 to $42.75 for children 4 to 12, plus taxes and fees, for 3 to 3.5 hours with naturalists aboard. Flagship promises a free next trip if no whales are seen, with no expiration. City Cruises quotes $60 to $75 per person with fees and taxes included for about 3.5 to 4 hours, boarding included. Its Ticket Assurance allows a reschedule or refund until 2 hours before boarding, except on some holidays and special events.

Next Level Sailing takes the sailing yacht America, which carries up to 77, out once a day for 3.5 to 4 hours. Adults pay $85 on weekdays and $95 on weekends, children 12 and under from $42.50, and water, soda, chips and granola bars are included. Guests can bring their own lunch and drinks (no red wine) and, with a reservation, a dog. If no whales or dolphins are seen, passengers can come back free on a future trip.

Watching from shore

  • Whale Watch Overlook, Cabrillo National Monument. The overlook on the park's western edge sits on the gray whales' migration path. Reach it by a steep half-mile hike on the Oceanside Trail from near Parking Lot 1, or by a paved path behind the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Whales can pass a few hundred yards offshore, moving right to left as you face west.

Before you book

  • Cabrillo National Monument charges $20 per car or $10 per person on foot or by bike (children 15 and under free), and the pass is good for 7 days; a Cabrillo annual pass costs $35.
  • Watching from Cabrillo, go in the morning or on a calm day, when spouts and flukes are easier to pick out; overcast skies also cut the glare.
  • Look for a heart-shaped spout up to 15 feet tall. After a gray whale shows its flukes, it may stay down for 3 to 7 minutes.
  • Getting there. San Diego International Airport is on North Harbor Drive, three miles (4.8 km) northwest of downtown San Diego. Drivers reach it from Interstate 5 by the Hawthorn Street exit northbound or the Sassafras Street exit southbound.
